When Awkward Turtles Attack

So...when spooning gets...awkward..............

Not like oh-my-word-this-is-so-awkward-I-wish-one-of-the-worms-from-Tremors-would-come-eat-me-alike awkward. More like middle school dance awkward, where you avoid eyecontact as you slow dance. Though I'm sure for some of you, the Tremor-worm-awkward and the middle school dance awkward are the same thing. (Heck, I'll admit it, they are for me.)

Anyways, spooning can get awkward and get awkward fast. Now I know past entries have been filled with tips, and I've specifically chosen topics that will hopefully enable you to minimize the awkward, but still, occasional awkwardness is as inevitable as spooning is awesome.

So, say something awkward happens (i.e. someone falls off the bed, someone toots, you spontaneously burst into an inappropriate song, your mom calls, someone is inappropriately aroused, your hair gets tangled on your watch, etc.). You have the following options:
#1. Ignore the awkward. It can be like covering the pink elephant in the room with yellow wallpaper, but sometimes, the elephant conveniently wanders out the door.
#2. Run out of the room screaming (preferrably screaming obscenities or the lyrics to Spice Girls songs-ZIG A ZIG AH!). This will be MORE awkward, making the previous awkward moment pale in comparison so much that hopefully your fellow spoon will forget about it.
#3. Make a joke. The joke can be relevant to the situation "I'm practicing for my career as a champion bed-faller-offer!" Or it can just be a normal joke, like "Why did the chicken cross the playground?" "To get to the other slide!" Or, you can make it a really dumb joke, like "Why did the chicken cross the road?...Mayonnaise!" Again, your spooning buddy will forget about whatever awkward thing just occurred and hopefully surrender to an onslaught of giggles...or else they'll just be really confused. Either way, the awkwardness gets diffused!
#4. Call in the ROFLcopters. Those LOLcats are right: LOLing fixes everything. So just make this face, have a nice laugh, and it will all be okay!

Hopefully that will help some. At any rate, they seem to work for me, especially the Spice Girls one. That one's a classic.

Happy spooning! (And happy awkward turtle slaying!)

a Spoonion to remember

Yep, after a long hiatus (caused by a decided lack of spoony people in my life), spoon facts is back with a vengeance.

I'm about to be reunited with some of the snuggliest people on earth. We're talking a reunion as epic as watching re-runs of Invader Zim people. It'll be a spoonion to remember. Spoonion-a reunion of people who spoon together. Yes, it has the word "onion" in it, but it has nothing to do with everyone's favorite layer filled root veggie.

So, what do you do when you're out of practice with the spooning?

The answer: pillows and teddy bears. Take your spooning position of choice and place pillow/bear accordingly so that it is acting as the appropriate big/little spoon. Get cozy. If you're me, you'll fall asleep out of sheer happiness. Not that happiness makes me sleepy. Well, sometimes. But you'll be supa comfy, so comfy that you'll feel like you're in one of those weird philadelphia cream cheese comercials set in heaven among the fluffy clouds. Mmmmm, cream cheese. Mmmmm, comfy clouds.

Prepare yourself for the fact that when your pillow/bear is replaced by a real human being, they will be physically warmer, so dress accordingly. Tank tops and baggy boy boxers are always appropriate spooning attire, and my uniform of choice for spooning. But in all honesty, though this IS the outfit to end all outfits, you can spoon in any outfit, rendering this entire section moot, so long as you have air conditioning or don't care about getting sweaty. (It is summer time after all.)

You will also have to re-acclimate yourself to the movement of other people and their respective curves. This is a case by case thing though, so just use past spoonfacts to adjust and get comfy with your spooning buddy.

HAPPY SPOONION!

Spice up your spooning...with menthol

Tis the season for allergies, my friends! I didn't know I had allergies, but it turns out I do! It's really exciting! Taking this fact into account along with the fact that I have recently had a request for talking about spooning and specifically coughing, I thought it was about time to dedicate a post specifically to a super sexy internal organ's relation to coughing - that being the LUNGS!

In my experience, coughing and spooning is a combination so sucky it makes the Noo-noo on Teletubbies look like it doesn't suck at all. And for those of you who don't know, the noo-noo is basically a giant vaccuum cleaner. Nothing is worse than being mid-cuddly moment and finding that you have a tickle in your throat, and knowing that that jolting, obnoxious cough is coming. Or maybe you have a ninja cough, where it just sneaks up on you. Even worse.

Damn ninjas, being all sneaky and whatnot. But unlike ninjas, coughing is not sexy or exciting.

But there's a good chance that the person you're spooning with won't mind too much. Generally, they'll try to be a good sport about it, and maybe even give you a little extra TLC in light of your exhalation issues. Of course, you should behave in a similar manner towards them should they be stricken with a cough.

Of course, you can always opt for some cough medicine, or my personal favorite, that candy-esque jewel that soothes spasming throats, the cough drop. It might be a good idea to opt for a cough drop flavor that your fellow spoon doesn't mind, especially if this is a regular spooning partner. Cherry menthol or anything ricola are my personal favorite. Definitely check out the ricola link in this post; it is definitely worth 30 seconds of your life.

(You know what's also worth 30 seconds of your life? SPOONING.)

Anyways, if you're more involved with your fellow spoon, you may have to reevaluate the whole kissing/coughdrops thing, but I'll leave that to you. You're smart. I'm sure you can figure it out. Just don't choke on a cough drop while kissing someone. Talk about a moment ruiner.

Other good options to fighting the evil that is the cough include liquids. Being hydrated is good for you anyways.

Anyways, feel better and best of luck fighting any cough that you may stumble upon!

Happy spooning! (And happy spring allergy season!)

Sleeping Beauty has morning mouth.

I'm pretty sure Sleeping Beauty must have had a killer case of morning mouth. Never mind the dragon outside the castle; no fairy's spell could manage to keep a princess' breath Listerine fresh for 100 years. So when her prince found her and woke her with a kiss, I really doubt it was as magical as Disney makes it seem to be. In fact, it would probably be pretty disgusting.

And she'd probably suck at spooning. If I'd slept in one position for literally ages, I'm pretty sure I would struggle with being an accommodating sleep-mate when my ideal life-partner suddenly appeared and woke me up, let alone accomplishing the feat of sleep-spooning.

So don't be a sleeping beauty and try to be a good spoon-sleeper. Here're my thoughts on how to make that happen:
Spontaneous snuggle-sleep is a good thing. If you're so comfortable with someone that you just drift off naturally, (A) clearly you've got a good spoon there, hang on to him/her, and (B) sweet dreams!
Already be super comfortable with the person you're sleeping next to, and be comfortable enough to rearrange if need be. Sleep-spooning is only a good thing if you don't wake up with a crick in your neck. I would recommend just adopting your favorite awake spooning position (whatever hand holdings/leg-layerings/hair situations etc. that you prefer) and just letting yourself fully relax in that position and drift off.
You're probably going to have to learn to sleep next to someone, unless you're either so exhausted it just happens naturally or you magically can sleep next to him/her and sleep well. Give yourself time; there's definitely a learning curve. Enjoy the process of learning! As School House Rock says, it's great to learn, 'cause knowledge is power!

Also, blankets are optional. (Also, clothing is optional, but that's a different story entirely.) It's really easy to get overheated sleeping this way; being curled up together tends to result in a lot of shared body heat. In my opinion, the electric blanket is a definite no-no unless you live in arctic fox friendly environments...or unless it's just really ridiculously cold some nights. Layers are your friends; you can always throw the top layer off if need be (so maybe you can consider them your fair-weather friends). Or, if you get chilly, you can always add another layer.

Dreams also create another interesting situation. I know if I have a bad dream and I'm sleeping in your arms, I'll probably wake you up, either when I jolt awake or because I lie there all panicky for a couple of minutes and I get tense (and it's pretty easy to tell when you're suddenly spooning someone who is absolutely rigid with post-nightmare panic, however brief it may be). And I'll feel super awful about it, because I don't want to wake somebody sleeping soundly up with my crazy accidental panic! But then I'll go back to sleep. It's obnoxious; even I admit it. Or sometimes, you have a cold and you just can't help coughing, or maybe you always wake up at 2 am and sneeze or something (that I don't do). The moral of this story: people have weird sleep habits. Everybody's got one. Hopefully you're comfortable enough with your spoon that your sleep quirks won't annoy them too much and vice versa, or that you can at least articulate to them if they're driving you crazy with their obsessive need to reset the alarm clock at 4 am or something. Otherwise, you might want to re-evaluate your spoonship (spoon-relationship), be it platonic or romatic or something else entirely. But that's just my opinion on that one and a friendly suggestion at best. You do what you want! :)

Happy spooning, and sweet dreams!

I'm big on basking.

Honestly, spooning has very little to do with romance in my personal experience. I spoon with a great number of my friends. They're like stuffed animals, that you can actually talk to and that have actual body heat. And that have less fuzz.
Though if you squeeze too tight, they do admittedly experience pain, so don't do that.

And then there are the people who are better than stuffed animals for cuddling. Okay, so almost anyone is. But there are the people towards whom you're romantically inclined (most people don't feel romantically inclined towards stuffed animals...though there is that pretty creeptastic phenomenon with the Japanese pillow dolls.), and being romantically inclined can take spooning to a different level.

Anyways, to borrow a term from middle school, spooning with someone you "like-like" is just a little more fun. (Note: urban dictionary, that esteemed source of knowledge, defines "like-like" as more than a crush but less than love.) It could involve more physical contact; it could be the same as spooning with one of your other friends except for it makes you smile a little bit extra inside.

Also, it could involve less clothing. Though for me, that's really not the case. What's a little spooning in your underwear between good friends? At least in my book, that's a fun way to spend a bizarre evening. And I swear no alcohol was involved. It did involve a bunny...and a cat...and pancakes...but no alcohol! Clothing-optional/minimal-ness if of course always your own personal call (and just because you can never hear this too many times- you are always entitled to say no or change your mind. Anyone who ever tells you or makes you feel otherwise needs to GTFO and is not worthy of spooning with you. I pinky-promise. And I don't break pinky-promises. They're fricking sacred. Check out this wikipedia article if you don't believe me. It includes what I consider The Laws of the Pinky Promise.).

There are more ways to show you like somebody than with a lack of clothing anyways. You can always opt for kisses, hugs, or just bask in the happiness. I'm big on basking. I'd totally recommend it.

So happy spooning!

The Good, the Bad, and the Body Wash

When I get all my work done in a timely manner, I get to use "the good soap." The good soap is Caress' Tahitian Renewal body wash. It smells ridiculously amazing, sweet, with hints of pomegranate and Tahitian palm milk. After a shower, I smell absolutely delicious, if I do say so myself. If I haven't finished my work in a timely manner, I have to use "the bad soap," which still smells pretty good, but it's a little bit inferior. It has a very strong sent of pomegranate and mango which can be a little overwhelming, but ultimately is still enjoyable.

Obviously, the point of this post isn't that olfactory motivation can be helpful in preventing procrastination -although that is incredibly true. No, my point is that having your own delightful personal scent can make you an even more enjoyable spooning partner. From Polo Black (one of my own personal weaknesses) to Axe (which is sometimes delightful and sometimes completely overpowering/downright disgusting smelling) to plain old Dove soap to GAP So Pink, find what works for you and makes you feel happy. It could be soap, cologne, perfume, shampoo, even whatever laundry detergent you wash your clothes in. You'll enjoy smelling delightful, and I'm sure your spooning buddies will appreciate it, too.

On that note, bathe. Regularly. And wash your clothes. Regularly. No one wants to spoon with someone who smells like Oscar the Grouch, even if he is grumpily adorable.

Happy spooning! (And smelling!)

The Chosen One

I was putting some spoons away in a drawer today, and I got really irritated at them because they refused to stay in their tidy vertical stack, especially when I attempted to close the drawer with a supa sexy hip bump.
The more spoons I added, the more easily my leaning tower of spoons fell. It was disappointing.

Then, I remembered the weird way I used to stack spoons when I was six.
I would take them so that all the bowl parts lined up, but let every other handle go towards the right so that the handles, which are generally pretty thick, wouldn't make the spoon tower as tall.
You heard me right - at age 6, I had a strategy to perfect spoon stacking stability. And yes, I know what you're thinking. Clearly, Lil Spoon must be The Chosen One, the one who can bring harmony to silverware drawers all over the world, the one we've been waiting for since the 13th Century.

Lol. If only a skill that useless could contribute to the betterment of the world.
Anyways, I stopped doing this because my mother designated me as The Chosen One (okay, as the family spoon stacker), and what six-year-old kid wants to be the spoon stacker and get called away from whatever Boxcar Children book or Arthur episode she is engrossed in just to stack spoons, which takes a good bit of time and patience when you're six and not particularly coordinated? Not I.

So what does this have to do with you, an actual human being who probably just puts spoons in a drawer like a normal person? Not a lot actually, beyond my admitting that like arranging spoons in a drawer, spooning with multiple people can get complicated. Let's face it-human beings who spoon have way more appendages than just the metal eating utensil. Things get crazy - too many legs/arms/appendages everywhere, a tremendous amount of body heat getting produced, various issues involving the height of your spoons...BUT if you take the time to strategize a little bit as you start spooning, it can be much more enjoyable. If you're spooning with a lot of people, you can organize by height. You can organize by couple if you're spooning with a bunch of dating people (which can get awkward at times, especially if you're the only single person or something - thus the strategizing can help you make it less awkward for yourself.)

Plan ahead. Channel your inner boyscout and be prepared! And then, channel your inner gymnast, and be flexible (both figuratively and literally!)!

My Hips Don't Lie

Okay, so regular posting epic fail. Life - it happens.
Anywho, I'm attempting to hop back on the blogging train! After all, spooning happens on a daily basis, so my blogging about it should, too.

Essentially, hips are important, especially if you're a girl or you're spooning with a girl (and in some cases both apply!) Although I know some gentlemen - especially some super spicy salsa dancers - with particularly fabulous hips, I think of hips as a primarily female feature. Granted, everybody walking around has hips, but the sheer sexy curviness of hips lies primarily in woman's domain in my personal (and admittedly heavily biased - but it's my blog, that's kind of the point) opinion.

Let's face it - hips are important. Even Barbie has semi-functional hips, even though her knees don't work. Sure, her boobs are so big and her feet so wacky that she would fall over and be completely immobile if she were a real person, but hey, she can sit and do the splits and work some hot little dresses because she's got those hips! Not only do hips let your legs move, but they're sexy. How could we be expected to shake it like a Polaroid picture without hips? Would Shakira be the goddess she is and would Elvis clocks be nearly as awesome without hips?

Ummm...NO!

So how do hips work into spooning? Hips create the perfect groove for resting a big spoon's over arm. Furthermore, hips allow you to master The Leap if you're a big spoon. And now you're wondering what's The Leap, right? The Leap is short for The Leg-Wrap, and furthermore it constitutes a big leap in comfort levels between spoons. I'm not talking a Batman leaping between buildings type leap. I'm talking more one of those awkward person-on-a-trampoline type leaps, small, but taking a little consideration and thought.

If you're comfortable with your little spoon, you can opt to wrap your leg over their body, pulling them closer. This takes a wee bit of flexibility, but it's totally worth it. And if you're really bendy (like Bend It Like Beckam bendy), you can opt to put your leg up and over your little spoon's hip! This can get uncomfortable after a while, but it can be nice. It's also pretty intimate, because it gets you really close, and by "you" I mean "your pelvises." So...on that note, enjoy!

Happy spooning!

the lonely epidermis and Cher

Please forgive me. I'm exhausted, and I got my H1N1 mist today which is making me feel kind of gross right now. If you consider this post inferior to the others in any way, (A) my apologies, and (B) just enjoy the excuse to laugh at me even more than usual because I'm not only as ridiculous as usual but also more stupid than usual.

There has been interest expressed in me continuing the body parts theme I had been going with about a week ago. I will go back to that (starting most likely with legs) in a couple of days, once I get real snuggles. In the meanwhile, it just makes my skin too lonely to write in vivid detail about my snuggling opinions. And no one likes a lonely epidermis.

For tonight, in keeping with last night's sexiness theme, and due in part to the fact that I just watched it: Moonstruck is an incredible movie. If you haven't seen Cher in her Oscar winning role, definitely take it under advisement. Not only is it perhaps one of the sexiest things I've ever seen (and I've seen some sexy things people), but you can watch it again and again because it's simply that incredible. It has a myriad of fine details (the hand in the airport, the wedding dress in the window, etc) that make it even more amazing each time you watch it. It's a very snuggle worthy movie, filled with scenes of old people romance, moon gazing, and an adorable old man with dogs. Who doesn't love an old man with dogs and old people romance? Very few people. Then again, I have a particular fondness for old people in general. I think they're super awesome. Nicholas Cage and Cher are phenomenal, with witty dialogue that you can easily adopt into a myriad of handy life mantras. Heck yes. I know it makes me feel super cuddly, and since it's plot is fairly simple and can be enjoyed even when you're at minimal capacity in regard to your intelligence (like me right now), it's a perfect choice for spooning!

Moonstruck gets 6 spoons up (6 being the size of an average dinner table, and thus an optimal number of spoons, assuming you are not using iced tea spoons, which I must acknowledge is a VERY southern thing.).

Anywho, I'm thinking after I finish going through various body parts and opinions and if I can't get my i-Tunes fixed, I'll go for an exploration of spoon worthy movies. It's definitely an option!

Happy spooning (watch Moonstruck!)!

Sexiness Happens

How epic is that screen cap? SO epic. That's from a conversation I had with one of my guy friends the other night. I love it. I want it on t-shirts, with a big "LOL" on the back. But why is this screen cap super appropriate? Today I'm blogging about spooning and sexiness!

You see, I totally spazzed out the other night because one of my guy friends told me that spooning is ALWAYS about sex.

Not to go all first grader on you guys, but ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. No. Not everything is about sex. But he says if you're snuggling with guys, it's "always" about sex (ironic considering he'd said he wanted to snuggle the night before when I talked to him). I found this icky. It's so icky that I'm not even going to use a more grownup word like "disgusting," "repulsive," or "revolting" to refer to it. It's just plain icky.

I don't think snuggling is about sex. Sure it most definitely CAN be. But not always, and not necessarily. But I just like being close to people and all physically wrapped up in them as much as I tend to be intellectually and emotionally. And it can still be somewhat sexy. I mean, let's face it, I only spoon with sexy people. It's a requirement. JK. Kind of. Not really. (I promise, I'm not really that shallow. I just happen to know loads of super sexy people.) And when you have a bunch of sexy people together, it's just naturally sexy. It's the way of the world. But that doesn't make it necessarily erotic or anything. And it's not like forthcoming sexual exploits are implied by any means, and it's not like sexy times are the goal. We just exude sexiness, and as we all know, sexiness happens.

So what have we learned? Sexy people are sexy. Spooning with them is naturally sexy, but in a more "that's hot" kind of way rather than a "sexy times are imminent" kind of way.

Now, you can totally take it to that level with a little extra touching and a little less clothing, but that's your prerogative, and that's when it stops being sexy spooning and goes to sporking.

Ofcourse, in honor of today's super sexy post, I'm rocking out to my super sexy theme song by David Guetta featuring Akon.

Happy spooning, you sexy utensils, you!

I'm bein' spon-tan-u-ous

Right now I'm listening to "My Beautiful Rescue" by This Providence. It's pretty much fanfreakingtastic. It's the kind of song that you just hear and you automatically start swaying and wish you had a bunch of people to sway with you. Or at least, I do.

Today I want to talk about spoontaneity. This is of course my personal hybrid word composed of of spooning and spontaneity. As Miley Cyrus says in her hit "Nobody's Perfect," "it might be crazy; I'll do it anyways!" There's something to be said for running headlong into something and throwing the humdrum ordinary things to the wind a little bit. Only you don't have to do something super crazy to make something exciting!

How the heck does spontaneity relate to spooning at all? Mix it up people! If you've been spooning with somebody for a while, switch it up a little. Keep your fave utensil on their shiny metal metaphorical toes. Grab your spoon's hand and take them somewhere new. Never spooned outside? Go for it! Never switched big and little spoon? Turn yo'selves over! (Although I know some people are strongly biased one way or the ever. I'll admit it - I am, too. But mixing it up sometimes can be fun!) Never tried the warlock? Grab that hand, you crazy spoon, you! Never played with your utensil's hair before? Get to playing! So your handhold ends up being awkward or something, or your reversal of your usual spooning positions ends up sucking? Let's go back to the sage wisdom of Miss Miley Cyrus, "Nobody's perfect, I've got to work it...nobody's perfect, you live and you learn it!" Change it again. Optimal spooning is a process, not a destination people.

So try mixing it up - you just might like it!

I know it sounds like a little thing, but spooning is all about the little things. God is in the details, people. Or in this case, utter bliss is in the details!

I'm sure some of you are wondering about the title of today's post, "I'm bein' spon-tan-u-ous." It is a quote from the cinematic gem Happy Feet, which though it features penguins as so many movies have recently and has a far fetched premise that penguins could save themselves from starvation by tapdancing, is a great film to enjoy with small children, watch when you need cheering up, or put on with your special spoon if you're not just platonic spoons and make out while watching, not unlike Transformers. Happy Feet happens to be one of my personal favorite movies. I actually have a Mumble plushy that says "I'm bein' spon-tan-u-ous." It inspires me.

Heck yes.

Happy spooning!

We're All Gonna Die (Thoughts on Homework)

Spoon Tunes is in the works still, lovely utensils! My i-Tunes is down, so it's going to have to wait until I manage to resurrect it. That definitely makes i-Tunes sound like Frankenstein a little bit. Cool. Very cool.

Since Spoon Tunes is on hold, I'm just going to do the song I'm listening to via youtube right now, which is "Pretty Little Thing" by Fink of course!
Life goal #133- learn to play this on guitar. Serenade someone, in a totally non creepy way. Preferably, serenade someone you know.
Life goal #134- be serenaded with this song.
It's a sexy song. Actually, it's beyond sexy. It's sextactular. Don't believe me? Take a listen!

Anywho, I thought I'd share my thoughts on homework and spooning, considering I currently have a vast quantity of homework that I've been working on for what feels like forever.

Honestly, you've got to do your homework. After all, it's great to learn, and knowledge is power. It's lovely and important, and the best spooning companions are super intelligent cuddly people with whom you can have fascinating conversations. Of course, that's my own heavily biased opinion, but heck, this whole thing is my opinion, so who cares!

But let's face it people - we're all gonna die. This isn't to put a damper on things; rather, this is to empower you! Carpe diem my spoons! Carpe amici laeta amoreque (Sieze your friends with happiness and love)! Everyone loves a Latin geek.

So, in the grand tradition of classic/amazing works such as John Donne's "The Flea" and Andrew Marvel's "To His Coy Mistress" (Sexy poem=sexy link. Watch it.), life is short. Get your spoon on, and enjoy your body, your friends, and your incredible ability to cuddle without being limited by arthritis pain. But don't neglect your work to do it! Homework first, spooning second. But stay on top of your homework (in a non sketchy way) so you have tons of time to spoon.

This is when time management fo realz pays off, peeps. Make it happen.

Happy spooning!

When life gives you lemons...

Whack them with a spoon!

Sometimes, life gets you down, but spooning helps pick you up! They're like the skin's own warm, snuggly prozac. If life were a merry go round, spooning would be that point when your pony/bunny/dragon/panda/giraffe reaches its pinnacle of height and you can't help but smile because you're on top of the world - or at least, you're on top of a colorful fake critter, and that's pretty close to the world. Kind of. Ish.

Anyways, spooning makes life better. So here are my thoughts on pick-me-up snuggles. Warmness is good. Body contact is good. Comfort is good. Tension is bad. I want some snuggles, because I am whiny and ridiculous.

Whining is bad. But sometimes, it's good for you. So I'm going to get it out of my system WHINE WHINE WHINE oh life is so unfair even though I live in a 1st world country and have all my needs provided for and attend a great school and have lots of people who love/like/tolerate me.

See! I just made myself look dumb, and I made myself laugh - all at the same time! So I feel better/ridiculous. Hooray!

Happy spooning, and happy not whining!

Spoon Tunes (Part 1)

I have compiled a list of 91 songs that I personally find snuggle appropriate, some romantic, some not romantic.
Plus 1 song actually, which is not snuggle appropriate in my opinion, but that I love anyways. This delightful extraneous tune is of course "Friends with Benefits" by 7 $ Sox. If that's what you want out of your spooning, go for it. But personally, no thank you. It's an amazing song though, whether you're looking for that sort of relationship or not. Definitely a good tune to get your groove on to.

So 91 is kind of a large number, though I may add or remove a few as I go back through my lists, but I thought I'd just go through a few a day until we reach the end. The romantic and the nonromantic kind of overlap, but then there are some clear outliers that are decidedly one or the other. Like John Mayer's "Your Body is a Wonderland." That's pretty romantic. (Please note, while sex and romance are not the same thing, on my list they are.) So while I guess I should technically say that "Your Body is a Wonderland" is sexy...I'm still gonna say it's romantic! Why? Because I can! Hooray for power!

Okay, power trip over. Today's selections are as follows:
  1. "Mona Lisa (When the World Comes Down)" by The All-American Rejects. It's a fantastic song, very chill, very all about being with one other person and enjoying it, even if the world ends. Heck, if the world ends I am definitely going to be snuggling as the world comes down.
  2. "I'm With You" by Avril Lavigne - more on the romance-y side. This edgy pop princess definitely is a good choice for enhancing your cuddling experience, especially her more mellow selections.
  3. "Steal My Kisses" by Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals. Romantic, adorable turn of the millennium classic.
  4. "The Longest Time" by Billy Joel. Fricking amazing. And who doesn't want someone to intend to hold them for the longest time? Also, this is amazing done a cappella.
  5. "No Rain" by Blind Melon. Good tune for some very relaxing snuggles.
  6. "A Whole New World" from the Aladdin soundtrack. This is of course super romantic, and down right amazing. 10 extra points to anyone who actually sings this to their cuddle utensil of choice. Both parts.
  7. "Hey Juliet" by LMNT. "I think you're fine. You really blow my mind. Maybe someday you and me can run away. I just want you to know, I wanna be your Romeo." Can you get any happier than this 90's classic? Let's ponder this...ummm...not really, nope. It's a little upbeat for relaxed snuggles though.
  8. "Put Your Records On (Acoustic)" by Corinne Bailey Rae. Very relaxing, especially appropriate when you've got your hair down and you just want to kick back and get your cuddle on. Particularly appropriate for all female snuggle gatherings.
  9. "Knights of the Island Counter" by Dave Melillo. Depressing, but great melody. It's heavily alcohol themed, so it might be good for intoxicated snuggling? Personally, I like it for sleepy snuggling.
  10. "Soul Meets Body" by Death Cab for Cutie. Amazing. 'Nuff said.
  11. "Take It Easy" by The Eagles. Good for when you're really wound up, and you and your fellow utensil need to remind each other of the joys of relaxing and cuddling.
  12. "Trolley Wood" by Eisley. Actually, the entire CD of Room Noises is perfect for cuddling. It's very relaxing and very filled with happiness, love, and oddities. So basically, if cuddling had a theme song, it would probably be Eisley related.
  13. "Rock 'N' Roll" by Eric Hutchinson. Technically, this is a folk song. It's been pretty populate lately, and with just cause. It's supa chill and supa awesome. Just like you.
  14. "Time on Your Side" by Emily Jane White. It just makes the tension melt out of me, which could mean potential melting into a fellow spoon and making the snuggles even better. I love it. So so so so much.
  15. "Sewn (Radio Edit)" by The Feeling. It's basically about somebody being whipped, but in a good, happy, loving way if that makes any sense. So they're sewn. And that's pretty much what cuddle buddies are - they're sewn in regard to each other. That in tandem with the fact that it's a gosh darn wonderful song with a gosh darn wonderful chorus makes it perfect for cuddling.
Goodness, that's a lot of tunes! I was going to try to link videos to all of these, and then I decided that I am lazy, tired, and getting up at 6 am tomorrow. So that kind of died before it even began. However, do listen to these, especially if you think they sound interesting! I know I have kind of ecclectic tastes and opinions in regard to music, so here's hoping there's something for everybody lurking somewhere in there!

Okay, so "lurking" is a little ominous and threatening sounding. Let's go with "nestling" instead. Also, I need to talk about music in general at some point. I'm making a large mental post-it about it.

So, happy listening and happy spooning!

So You've Had a Bad Day

Let's face it guys, s*#t happens, ranging from big traumas to relatively much smaller ones. People get sick, people lose their cellphones, people other people love die, people have car accidents, people fall down, people have stuff get stolen, people dent their car, people are mildly disturbed by an inappropriate comment, people have cruddy days, people get stuck in elevators, people get stuck in traffic, people get stalked by creepers/creeper old men, people watch terrifying children's movies, people get lost in the rural South and then panic and proceed to drive at 90 miles an hour in the middle of nowhere in the wrong direction for an hour and a half...

Not that that last one has happened to anyone or anything.

But sometimes bad things happen, and if you're like me, you need some snuggles to make it all better. I know my nerves personally get fried sometimes due to a variety of reasons both serious and ridiculous, and one of the best ways to get me back to my normal semi-functional typical self is with snuggles! There's nothing quite like having somebody you know gives a damn wrapped around you, even if you're not quite yourself. So here are my tips for bad day/event related snuggles:

Patience is lovely and berry berry important. I know though it's like that icon of icons Madonna says, "time goes by so slowly," especially when you're upset or someone you care about is upset, so just remember that what's important is to be patient and not freak out if you're not cheered up/cheering some one up very expeditiously (wow. Expeditiously is a pretty long word now that I think about it. Awesome.). I know if I'm really upset, I don't always want to be touched right away, and it really depends on what has upset me.

It's also important to remember that you might not know everything about somebody's past, and that they might have issues with particular aspects of snuggling (This applies for all the time, but I know it can escalate when people are upset).

Be extra gentle. The upset spoon gets dibs obviously on whether he/she wants to be big or little, or if they just want hugs or another style of cuddles. Back rubs for the win to make the tension go away that tends to build up in people's shoulders/necks/backs. I know snuggling someone rigid or someone nearly curled up in the fetal position can be hard (no one ever wants to snuggle a fetus. Unless they're like a TOTAL freak or something.), but it's definitely worth it to help calm your utensil in need down. Making someone feel happy and safe is a wonderful gift, which is rather cliche, I know, but it's true. Also, playing with or petting someone's hair can be a great option, too; it tends to be very calming. People are surprisingly a lot like puppies and kitties in the way they physically respond to touch and demonstrations of affection. Some people even purr, and I know a guy whose leg wiggles like a puppy's if you play with his hair. It's greatly amusing.

Anywho, you don't have to say a lot if you don't have anything to say - what's important is that you're there with your special spoon, which I know sounds supa cliche. Wow, that makes for 2 epic cliches in one post. But whatever. It's life. Cliches make the world go round. Deal with it.

Also, since this was kind of a serious post, I'm going to blog about something super happy later, like spoon tunes!

Happy spooning!

P.S. I'm participating in a new blog about Unconventional Christians, written entirely by some delightfully unconventional people! If you've been following this blog, or if you personally know me, then I guess you know that I'm pretty unconventional in general. So, if you'd like to listen to me and some other people whom I promise are way cooler than me blab a little bit about our religious views and whatnot, you can check it out here. It's just getting started, but I think it'll shape up into a pretty cool thingermajig. Yes, I just said thingermajig; you read correctly. Congratulations, you're literate! :)

Cyber Spooning - It Happens

Spooning withdrawal.
It's happening.
Ugh.

So spooning withdrawal is definitely a legit thing, and it kind of bites. I find that if I've had oodles of snuggles lately, suddenly going without for a period of time from 24 hours+ can be a little sad.

How do you tell if you have spooning withdrawal, you say?

Symptoms may include:
your skin feeling lonely or particularly sensitive
you smelling like yourself rather than snuggly other people
cold hands
restlessness
inability to sleep
desire to hug random strangers
clinginess with people with whom you do not usually snuggle/spoon
vast quantities of childhood stuffed animals in your bed
hugging yourself periodically
daydreams of snuggles
slight compulsion to consume juice boxes (okay so that's probably just me)
excessive desire to blog about snuggling (okay, probably also just me)

Anywho, you may be without your usual silverware at some point, be it due to vacation, general chaos, or midterms, and you've got to deal.

So how do you deal? While I have yet to develop a full scale 12 steps, here are some general tips:
  • surround yourself with pillows/stuffed animals/fluffy blankets
  • take a warm bath. It's like tiny liquid big spoons for your pores. Yep, that's a weird comparison. Good times, good times.
  • take a shower, because it's like a vertical bath mixed with man made rain
  • watch a movie that doesn't make you want to cuddle out of terror/happiness, if such a thing exists (Then again, I find a terrible lot of movies are terrifying at some point or another, including The Lion King, Happy Feet, and Jurassic Park.)
  • write a poem about spooning
  • write a blog about spooning
  • drown your sorrows in homework
  • hug your dog/mom/neighbor/life size Barbie
  • dance naked. Preferably, with your curtains drawn and your door locked, because sometimes some people don't appreciate true art.
  • daydream about past snuggles or future snuggles you would like to have
  • make lists of epic places to snuggle. On a window washer thingy outside of a building? On a ferris wheel? On a boat?
  • count some spoons (not sheep. spoons>sheep. Sheep smell icky. Spoons are cuddly. Clearly, spoons win.) and get some ZZZZ's
  • cyber spooning with one of your fave spoons. This requires you to really think of some excellent cuddle-related verbs if you want to get any actual satisfaction out of this.
  • enjoy a hobby that takes all of your focus, like building model air planes. Or building a model of the Millennium Falcon out of gumdrops. Or masturbating.
I hope these help!

Happy un-spooning, ya'll (I'm using the mother tongue in honor of my current locale!)!

Ice Ice Spoony

Confession: I don't post every day, or at least I haven't lately. It's not that I don't adore blogging about spooning, but I just happen to like actual spooning even better. Sorry guys. But how can I properly inform you in regards to spooning if I don't practice a lot? It'd be like Miss Manners never ever sending a thank you note or something, and that's just wrong.

Essentially, you can bet if I'm not posting, I'm either enjoy some cuddle time IRL, or I'm just splashing in a big pool of homework-y goodness. Mmmm homework-y goodness. JK. Kind of. Knowledge for the win. Procrastination for the lose.

But snuggles+procrastination for the epic win.

So I thought I'd focus on something I touch on a lot - snuggling a cold spoon.

So stop. Collaborate and listen.
Lil Spoon's back with a brand new mission.
Just grab ahold of your spoon tightly,
hold the cold hands both daily and nightly.
Will it ever stop, yo, I don't know.
Turn off the lights, and scoot close.
To the extreme hold the spoon like a vandal;
warm your spoon up like you was a candle.
Hug, get close, to the spoon that's for you;
she's feeling quite chilly like feet of a new groom.
Get close, like notes in a melody;
Anything less than the best is a felony.
Love it or leave it; you better not wait.
You better get close, this spoon don't play.
If there's spoon problems, yo I'll solve it.
Check out my hook while the big spoon revolves it.

Ice Ice Spoony.

Feel loved. I don't write internet parodies of nineties hits for just anybody you know.

Although there was that one time that I did MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" but I made all the lyrics MC Escher related. That was nice.

Essentially, if you've got a cold little/big spoon, accommodate each other! Hold hands, cuddle closer for warmth, place body parts between other body parts and the remarkably cold ground. Tuck hands into pockets, place them around necks, scoot close, switch front and back, intertwine legs/arms for maximum contact and subsequent warmth. This is a fairly straightforward one. Granted, some of these are more necessary for when you are snuggling in the actual cold (or what I would consider cold, considering as a Southern lady, I find most temperatures below 60 to be remarkably chilly. Yes, I'm a legit  Southern lady for those of ya'll who just internally LOLed a little.) But if you're inside, and just a little cool, just scoot a little closer, maybe opt for a blanket, and get your warlock/interlock/wrap on.

Happy spooning!

It'd Suck to Big Spoon Rapunzel

So sometimes in life you come to a crossroads. Now I'm not talking a BIG LIFE CHOICE like do I want to go to med school or law school, or BIG LIFE CHOICE do I want to ask person x out, or even BIG LIFE CHOICE will I be terrified out of my mind if I watch Jurassic Park. And then you angst. Just a little bit. Not like Harry in Potter Puppet Pals "Wizard Angst." More like general pout inducing frustration, like my dry erase board marker is out of ink, or I forgot to water my plant again.

So what is my current cause of spooning angst? My hair.

You see, I have WAY too much hair. And I have to admit, I love it. It makes me feel princess-y, and it's supa fun to brush it. I feel like the perfect curly haired barbie I always wanted. I was never satisfied with their inferior lustrousness and bounce of their fake curls, and I feel like mine has hit that place Barbie was never able to reach. It's swishy and happy and fun, not too curly, not too straight. To quote one of my favorite children's stories, it's what Goldilocks would call "just right."

I promise, this isn't just an excuse to talk about my hair and how much I love it.

Okay, maybe it is just a little bit. But, it keeps getting in the way when I'm snuggling! Keep in mind, I tend to snuggle a lot. I hope you do too. But when I snuggle, I have to put it up or else I feel like I'm going to suffocate somebody if I'm a little spoon! And generally, I am ridiculously fond of my big spoons, and I prefer them...well...alive. (Necrophilia+spooning for the lose. Just in case you were wondering. Ew. Gross gross gross.) Think about Rapunzel with her ridiculously long braid. How much would it suck to be her big spoon? Um, SO MUCH. Her hair would be like having a boa constrictor to cuddle with, beyond just an adorable princess. That's pretty sucky. No one wants to cuddle a boa constrictor and a princess. At least, no sane person.

So what all of this boils down to is that having a little spoon with copious amounts of curls (or straight locks) can be a tricky thing.

Anywho, I thought I'd provide some words of pseudo-wisdom about hair angst.

Ponytails are your friend, as are buns. However, they can form a barrier between you and your big spoon if not done so as to allow for forthcoming physical contact. No one wants to stick their face into a bun on the back of your head (Especially if you have bobby pins. Safety first, dear spoons.). So, plan ahead. Use a ponytail holder. You can also adjust your hair depending on what side you're lying on. You're smart utensils. I'm sure you can figure this sort of thing out.

Or, you can tuck your hair out of the way, opposite of the direction of your big spoon's lovely face, and if you end up getting tangled or your hair pulled in some weird way, you can always communicate this to your big spoon very kindly, and he/she will certainly adjust for you. If not, then honey, you need to find yourself a more accommodating big spoon. You should be comfortable enough with anybody your spooning with to ask for such adjustments though. Being not in pain is a good thing, and it's especially a good thing when the point of what you're doing is inducing general comfort and happiness.

Or, if you're really that intense about your spooning, you can just shave your head. But I'm pretty intense about my spooning, and I damn sure ain't doing that. See, that's how serious I am. I've reverted to my mother tongue (Southerner), in order to express how much I do not want to shave my head.

Also, for long and short haired spoons alike, delightful smelling shampoo is definitely a plus. If you're spooning with someone regularly, they will generally come to know and love your shampoo scent, so it helps if it's gosh darn delicious to begin with. (Ew, I just ended a sentence with a preposition. But I'm lazy. So deal with it.)

Happy spooning!

The Full on Ladle

Okay, so I’m sure you’re all “what’s a full on ladle?” And if you’re not, then that’s weird, because it’s something I made up.

As the term suggests, ladling is a little more intense than spooning. However, it’s not like sporking or forking. Ladling is simply an alternative arm style, and it can be pretty hard to master. Not like being a ninja is hard to master. More like internet mahjong is hard to master. Although internet mahjong can be pretty hard. So more getting the perfect proportions of PB to J can be hard to master. It can be done fairly easily; it just takes a little practice.

Honestly, most snugglers I have encountered don’t full on ladle. In fact, very few do. It can be uncomfortable, and it has to be done in the right setting. And what is that setting? Why the bedroom of course! I mean that in a completely non suggestive way. Beds are nice for cuddling because they’re soft and pillowy.

So I’m sure at this point, you’re all going OH EM GEE what is ladling? And since it’s not like you have ESPN or something (10 points to whoever gets the reference – and like in Whose Line, the points don’t matter), I guess I’m just going to have to straight out tell you. Ladling is when the big spoon takes their underneath arm and wraps it under the little spoon’s body, wrapping them in a full on embrace. Thus, you are more surrounded than in a typical spooning, making it – insert trumpet fanfare here – a full on ladle.

So why is this so hard? It’s just a weird hug lying down right? Um wrong. How wrong? That’s as wrong as saying  that Blue always finds four clues, or that Big Brother isn’t watching you, or saying that Sexy Bitch is not my theme song. That’s how wrong it is.

Basically, it’s hard just because it can be an awkward arm position. If you’re on anything besides a nice soft bed/couch, there’s a good chance the big spoon’s arm won’t be so super comfy, or that they may lose feeling in their fingers at some point. But ladling can be fun, especially if you’re being silly or trying to comfort someone or just trying to steal extra body heat from someone (yeah, I know it’s a recurring theme…I’m REALLY cold all the time.). So, if your big spoon is talented enough to make both of you comfy while doing it, go for it, my sweet silverware snugglers! It’s not like it’s any sketchier than normal spooning; it’s just a little more warm and toasty and happy. It’s just an extra special hug, for your extra special inner spoon.

Happy Ladling!

Why I Don't Spoon with Darth Vader

So yesterday, I mentioned that today's post would be about breathing. Big surprise - today's post is about...breathing!

Everybody breathes. Just like everybody poops, which is that really bizarre book from the nineties or something. So, breathing and spooning kind of go hand in hand in a very natural way, like peanut butter and jelly, or Bert and Ernie. It just makes sense.

This post is going to focus on the big spoon, because the little spoon can pretty much breathe however he/she wants and no one can give a damn because he/she is not breathing directly near somebody else's body.

It has come to my attention that a big no-no is mouth breathing while being the big spoon. Nobody likes a mouth breather. And sure as I've said that, somebody probably has some bizarre mouth breathing fetish (if some people have that fetish involving glue and frogs - NOT ME EW - I'm sure a mouth breathing fetishist is out there), but most people find somebody holding them close and breathing out of their mouth and into their hair/neck pretty gosh darn gross.

It's kind of like Darth Vader being your big, black plastic spoon. Just imagine, he's holding you close on some celestial starship, and it's nice, right? It's been a long day in the galaxy far far away and a little spooning is just what you need. And then all of a sudden you feel the creepy breaths out of his triangle shaped mouth piece on the back of your neck, and your spine pretty much freezes in sheer horror due to the utter grossness. At that point, Jar Jar Binx might be a preferable option. This is a problem.

So, don't be a mouth breather. It's gross. Breathe through your nose, and breathe normally. Just don't think about it.

However, now that I've said that, there's just a leeeeeetle problem. Thinking about your breathing makes you breathe in strange ways. This random German play by Peter Hanke from the 60's talks a lot about that, just in case you wanted to know. Think of it this way, it's like I told you not to think of a pink elephant. What're you probably thinking about? Some sort of glorious pink pachyderm. And if you're me, then you're imagining it tap dancing in a tutu. You know you're jealous. Essentially, you're probably a little more conscious of your breathing right now than you would usually be simply because I've told you NOT to focus on it so much. So basically, just try to keep it real. If you catch yourself as a big spoon mouth breathing, adjust.

But what if you're sick? Then ask if you can be the little spoon for convenience's sake. You could probably use the sheer comfort of being surrounded if you're physically ailing anyways. Being a sick little spoon can be very comforting. It's like chicken noodle soup, but you're your own spoon, delivering your own comfort all over your body! Okay, weird metaphor. I'm a little out of it due to some intensive tickles that are happening right now as I write.

So, some nice things about breathing. I thought I'd mix it up a little, since I've been a little bit of a breathing pedant tonight. You can do pretty fun things with your breath by breathing in different ways, especially once you get to know your little spoon. Some people have particularly sensitive backs of their necks or sensitive ears. However, this tends to get pretty intimate pretty quickly. Unless you don't want to get to sporking (or subsequently to forking), this may not be the best idea. But if you're particularly close to your little spoon, you can always experiment. Or if you really feel like getting crazy, you could ask them what they like! I know, crazy concept right - actually talking with your fellow snuggle utensil about their preferences.

Anyways, breathing is good! Do it while spooning! But not in a weird way.

Happy spooning!
